Caramelised Onion Tart

This is one of the easiest and most delicious starters that literally everyone will love! This Indian spiced caramelised onion tart is to die for!

Ingredients:

Puff Pastry

2-3 Large White Onions (could use red too)

Black Mustard Seeds (optional)

Curry Traders Indian BBQ Rub

Lemon

1 Egg

Method:

  1. Prep your onions! Peel and thinly slice your onions, the thinner the better as they will cook faster and be more enjoyable to eat.
  2. Preheat your oven to 200-220 degrees
  3. On low-medium heat in a pan add a splash of any neutral oil (we used mild extra virgin olive oil).
  4. Slowly cook down your onions, don’t have the temp too high or they will burn, you can always add a tiny splash of water if they start to burn and then turn the heat down.
  5. Once the onions have sweated down nicely and are looking translucent add half a teaspoon of black mustard seeds and 2-3 tablespoons of our Curry Traders Indian BBQ Rub. Continue to cook the onions until brown and caramelised. They should be sweet and soft. Add extra rub to your liking.
  6. Pop your onions in a bowl and add a big squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper to your taste.
  7. Grab your puff pastry out of the freezer. To get that delicious crust we used an extra sheet to cut the crust so it was nice and thick. Remove the plastic baking a pop it onto a baking tray. With the other piece, cut 2-3cm strips of pastry to act as the border.
  8. Place your strips on the outside of the first sheet of puff, and then you have your tart base ready to load up. In the centre square, poke a few holes in the pastry, then add your onion mixture evenly.
  9. Whisk your egg to make an egg wash and brush the crust of the tart, then pop it into the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is cooked through and golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before cutting and serving fresh and warm! Top with fresh coriander if you like!
